Sunday Service: On the Road with Jesus

“What does it mean to follow Jesus on this road trip? I had a professor that would always say, ‘If you don’t know where you’re going then you’ll never get there.’ As we get closer to Holy Week – the Triumphant Entry, the Last Supper, the Passion, the Resurrection – We inevitably ask about our status as fellow journeymen on this road. Christ is on His way to suffer and be crucified. His instructions are to be ready to suffer and be crucified. He tells us to be ready to hate our very own family, to hate our very own lives! What does this mean? Why such harsh language? We’ll explore this together. What is the cost of following our Lord? Will we have to experience the rejection, the suffering, and even the same manner of death as Jesus? Are we willing to go through this? Also, are we ready to take care of each other, to bare the financial cost of lifting each other up when the world says we must go the way of the Empire? Together we will weigh the Cost of Discipleship. I’ll share some of the experience I have had with my community of faith in the Afghan ethos. We will look at the price the Apostles paid as well as the early Church Fathers and Mothers. The communities they made were self-sacrificial expressions of love where some people died for their Faith and lived as Jesus taught; to take care of one another. Each of these expressions of love are costly and sometimes one will lead to the other.” -David K.
